Carmi and parts of unincorporated White County are within an Illinois Enterprise Zone.  Incentives include sales tax exemption on building materials, property tax abatements, job tax credits and low interest loans.

U.S. not seasonally adjusted 9.7% Illinois 10.8%

White County 9.2%, Edwards 9.9%, Wabash 10.4%, Wayne 10.3%, Hamilton 9.7%, Jefferson 11.0%, Richland 10.5%, Saline 11.1%, Gallatin 10.9%.  U.S. seasonally adjusted 10.0% Illinois 11.1%

"A prolonged national recession notable for its stubborn job growth continues to pressure our local economies and change our local landscapes,” IDES Director Maureen O’Donnell said. “A positive way to meet that change is to identify and obtain the skills that will be in demand when this national recession relents and job growth returns to Illinois."

The City of Carmi has established a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Redevelopment Area.  The TIF program provides for funds to help pay for defined Redevelopment Project Costs, including infrastructure improvements, which will assist new private development and enhance property values in the general area of the TIF.  The city anticipates this investment will not only benefit properties within the TIF Area but also those outside its boundaries.
